Employee Spotlight: Polly McGrane
We’ve never worked with someone as consistently smiley and upbeat as Polly. It never feels forced or contrived, and it makes her a true joy to work with and she lifts everyone else up alongside her.
"Employee" Spotlight: Bellatrix and Bellisima
Yes, we know that our stills are “inanimate” objects. But you can’t spend 10+ years making rum without realizing that they do, in fact, have personality. We named ours Bellatrix and Bellisima. Read on to meet them personally!
Meet the Growers: Gene Adolph
Gene is one of the Louisiana farmers who grows about 500 acres of raw cane every year for the mill that provides our sugar cane. He brings a lot of passion to growing a crop we depend on.
Zero-waste Travel: How We Do It
The more we work toward going zero-waste, the more people want to know how we do it. Especially when it comes to the things like travel. Here of some of the things our founder and owner Karen Hoskin does to avoid trash on the road.
Employee Spotlight: Shane Walker
An Alaskan native from the Aleut tribe, Assistant Kitchen Manager Shane Walker says that Colorado is his home away from home. We’re glad, because that means he brings his talents to Montanya Distillers.
Rum on the Road: Miami, FL
Let’s be honest: the City of Miami and Miami Beach need no introduction. Beaches. Bars that never close. A culture of celebration. Karen visited Miami over the winter, happily trading snow for sand and participating in the Miami Rum Congress.
Celebrate Spring with a Rum Cocktail (Recipe Included!)
Spring. That time of year when most places in the northern hemisphere start to experience gentle rains, green grass and the first flowers of the year. In our neck of the woods? Well, let’s just say that spring is more of a change in the air. Snow lasts a long time around here, but that doesn’t keep us from celebrating the change in season with a great spring cocktail. Read on for a “renegade” recipe!
Employee Spotlight: Alissa Johnson
When Alissa discovered Crested Butte, she took a leap of faith, quit her corporate job, and moved here with her dog nine years ago. Since then she launched her own business and came to Montanya.
Rum on the Road: Glenwood Springs, CO
Montanya Distillers makes its home at the end of the road in a mountain town, but the remote location doesn’t keep owner and CEO Karen Hoskin from exploring the world. Her pursuit of quality spirits takes her from hidden gems in the Colorado Rockies to the busy streets of San Francisco and Miami. In this blog series, we share some of Karen’s best finds. Next up: Glenwood Springs, CO.
How to Make a Great Rum Cocktail
At Montanya Distillers, an uncanny number of reviews start with a simple phrase: “I don’t normally drink rum, but…” Something about our cocktail menu transforms visitors from “never-evers” into rum lovers, and it’s pretty crazy when we step back and think about why. For starters, we have nearly 40 cocktails, but only 4 different liquors—all of which are rum. In this week’s blog post, we share a few thoughts on what allows us to get so creative.
Changing the Way Rum is Sold
In February of 2019, Montanya Distillers launched two new partnerships that brought our rums to France and Chicago. Both of these new partners are changing the way spirits are sold, which is great for consumers!

The sister cafes offer everything from specialty coffee and great food to craft beer, cocktails, and wine—anything that helps facilitate any kind of getting together. And they feature Montanya rums.
Employee Spotlight: Sarah Chesebrough
Not many people can say they’ve gone from the Goldman Sachs Foundation to the world of rum, but Sarah can. You can find her bottling Montanya Distillers rum or in the kitchen cooking up our increasingly popular food menu.

A Q&A with Karen Hoskin
There’s a time-honored tradition of distilling rum in the mountains, including places like Guatemala, Colombia and Panama that predates even Caribbean rum. And now there’s Colorado.
