Age Statements & Labeling

Age Statements · Labeling

There is a lot of variation when it comes to distilling and aging rums, and there are few requirements about how to report it to consumers. We provide more than is required of us because we believe that customers should be clear on what they’re buying and how it’s made.

Age Statements

Montanya Oro and Platino rums are aged for one year or more in American White Oak barrels that previously held Laws Colorado Whiskey. Montanya Exclusiva is aged for two-and-a-half years in a Laws Whiskey barrel and six months in a Sutcliffe Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon and Port barrel made from French Oak.

All Montanya Rum is aged, generally for a a minimum of one year and longer for the Exclusiva and limited releases. Click here to learn more about about our individual rums.

Due to sourcing issues in 2019, future bottlings of the Exclusiva may be finished in barrels from a different supplier. The rum will still be finished in Cabernet Sauvignon and Port barrels made from French Oak, but from a different source. Labels will be updated accordingly.

The Valentia released in 2019 aged for three years and nine months in a Laws Whiskey House Barrel and then finished for three months is a Rye barrel from Catoctin Creek Distilling Company.

Very early on for a hot minute, we used some Buffalo Trace barrels, but we retired them all in 2009. Early on, we also brought some rum to market that was younger than a year, and we did so again in early 2012 due to a growth of demand and the delay in bringing our new Crested Butte facility on line.

We are committed to bottling only mature Montanya Rum and not sacrificing quality for quantity or to speed up the process. Occasionally a barrel matures the rum more quickly, and occasionally a barrel takes longer than usual. We taste test on a daily basis to monitor the aging process and progress.  Every bottle of Montanya rum is marked with a barrel number. If you ask, we can tell you precisely how many days that rum spent in the barrel.

Labeling

Every bottle of Montanya Rum is clearly marked with the barrel number, how long it barrel aged, and in what type of barrels. Bottles that are part of our 2021 partnership with Three Roll Estate will be denoted on the barrel number (TR-barrel number), and meet all of the same standards and certifications noted on the Montanya Distillers label. All bottles are also clearly marked Gluten Free and Kosher (not for high holidays).
