Our grandparents’ generation knew how to throw a party. Whether it was for Bridge club, neighborhood weenie roasts, or holiday gatherings, they put guests at ease with a warm welcome - and a cold drink. Yes, no matter what the occasion, guests were greeted at the door with the host’s #1 most important question: “What can I get you to drink?” These pitcher cocktails are the answer to that question.
The holiday season in full swing. But toasting with a festive drink and celebrating with loved ones doesn’t have to mean sacrificing your values. I ask you, dear readers, has there ever been a better time to be a lover of glorious rum? New York, nontropical though it may be, has nonetheless become the backdrop for many a rum lover’s rum loving. This social season has so far been full to bursting with opportunities for deep investigation of the storied spirit. (And maybe a sip or two.)

Crested Butte, Colo., November 8, 2018 – Montanya Distillers is proud to announce it is now a Certified B Corporation®. The distinction honors the rum distillery’s commitment to social and environmental sustainability. Montanya received a score of 119 from B Lab ®, a nonprofit that certifies and supports B Corporations. Montanya’s score is currently 32% higher than other distilleries on the list. This certification makes Montanya Distillers the first distillery in Colorado to become a B Corp™ and the third in the country.
5. Montanya Platinum, Colorado:
Montanya Distillers is nestled high in the Rocky Mountains at 9000 ft. in the charming town of Crested Butte, Colorado. Our high alpine location makes great sense for making rum, since the altitude positively affects almost every aspect of fermenting, distilling and aging rum.

In this day and age of jargon and dubious news, we hear terms such as green, sustainable, carbon footprint, renewable and eco-friendly daily. We rarely share a definition for these terms. A company might implement one sustainability practice and then call themselves a green company. Another company may go deep with hundreds of eco-friendly practices in every aspect of their work, and nobody ever hears about it.
Rockstar Games’ newest title, Red Dead Redemption 2 — the next installment in the series and the first since 2010’s Red Dead Redemption — is a masterpiece of a game. From the 60 hours of storyline gameplay to the open world that reacts to you as much as you react to it to the fact that you can spend as much time as you want doing nothing more than petting street dogs, there is something for everyone who has ever picked up a video game controller at least once in their life.
The spirits industry is made up of many colorful characters. Women have been a part of the industry in one way or another all along though rarely as the face of the brand but that’s changing.
Karen Hoskin can be described as a serial entrepreneur, having started a number of businesses over the years. She is perhaps best known for Montanya Distillers, however, which produces craft rum right here in Crested Butte. The tasting room, located in the heart of Crested Butte on Elk Avenue across the street from the post office, has become one of Crested Butte’s go-to visits for small plates and a delicious rum cocktail (or two!). In this podcast episode, Karen and I discussed her business endeavors, the process of making rum in the Colorado mountains, and making the move from Silverton, where Montanya’s originally started.
This last weekend at the Hotel New Yorker, children young and young at heart experienced something similar at The Big Chocolate Show.
The hotel’s ballroom and mezzanine hosted about 50 different chocolate and related vendors, most of which were sampling their wares.

Work: A Rum Distiller | 160
Karen Hoskin is a rum distiller: that’s pretty cool, right? But here's what’s especially interesting about Karen: She’s a woman in a field where's simply not a lot of women, she had no experience making rum (or any sort of liquor, really) when she began, and... a rum distiller in Colorado? That’s an unusual place for making rum.
Crested Butte is one of the coolest ski towns of Colorado. Off the beaten track, a colorful heritage town with a rocking Main Street filled with locals on cruiser bikes in the snow and some of the best ski terrain in the USA.
What’s not to love?
Zach Pickett fell in love with the town over five years ago and hasn’t left since. He loves it so much he ended up working for Crested Butte Mountain Resort. This is his Insider Guide.
These highly-regarded, award-winning, innovative, artisanal and luxe spirits are doing small batches right.
