Why Sustainable Distilling Matters and the Craft Distilleries Leading the Charge

Why Sustainable Distilling Matters and the Craft Distilleries Leading the Charge

When it comes to sustainability, distilleries have not traditionally been model citizens. In fact, according the Beverage Industry Environmental Roundtable (BIER) 2018 Benchmarking Study, distilleries are the most water-intensive facilities in the alcohol industry due to the distilling and cooling processes.

We spoke to five different bars and asked them to come up with three cocktails made with a different base spirit; two classic preparations to give choice to finicky cocktail drinkers, and a third, more obscure or inventive cocktail. So whether you’re looking for something refreshing after a long day in the saddle or something slightly warming after a day of spring skiing, you’ll find it here.

Montanya Distillers Partners With Bigfish, Innovating How Spirits Are Sold

Crested Butte, Colo., April 8, 2019 – Montanya Distillers is now part of the BigFish platform, an innovative way for consumers to buy craft spirits made in the U.S. and around the world. Many craft brands aren’t sold in local liquor stores due to distribution laws making it prohibitive, which means many liquor stores mainly carry mainstream products. BigFish strives to blow the lid off this current model through its mobile platform and its rigorous vetting process. The platform makes it easier for consumers to shop for and learn about craft spirits and then have the product delivered to their home.

Celebrating Female Distillers

Celebrating Female Distillers

March is National Women’s Month, so we-re featuring women who aren’t only calling the shots, they’re making them.

Story by Ruksana Hussain

The spirits industry is booming and the number of distilleries across the U.S. is growing. The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States reported record spirits sales in 2017, with a four percent increase for a total of $26.2 billion. While the majority of American distilleries are male-owned, the number of women helming the stills is on the rise. Since March is National Women’s Month, we’re featuring seven women who are shaking up the status quo. Here, they share some of the highs and lows of their work.

Though the spirits industry is often characterized as one dominated by men, that isn’t to say that there aren’t plenty of women who are currently at the helm of some of the world’s most notable liquor brands. From master distillers, brand ambassadors and owners to those at the forefront of marketing, innovation and every role in between, these women haven't let stereotypical industry “norms” hold them back. Today they are leaders in their respective fields, shaking up the world of liquor, all while proving gender is irrelevant when it comes to crafting the perfect libation.

Ten Ways I Freed my Distillery from Environmental Irresponsibility

Ten Ways I Freed my Distillery from Environmental Irresponsibility

By Karen Hoskin

Does your distillery have a “deathprint”?

Every kilowatt-hour of coal-generated electricity is 670 times more likely to kill someone than wind power. Every plastic cup used at tasting events will hang around for 450 years or more in piles of waste. Airline travel and freight shipments will produce 27% of greenhouse gases. These facts, back in 2008 when I started my distillery, made it hard for me to sleep at night.

Same Dream, Different Roads Lead to Rum

Same Dream, Different Roads Lead to Rum

Three of the country’s foremost craft distillers—the trailblazing Karen Hoskin (Montanya Distillers); the financial theorist Bridget Firtle (Owney’s Rum); and the erudite Maggie Campbell (Privateer Rum) couldn’t have chosen more disparate paths toward making award-winning rums. Their eventual convergence on the sugarcane spirit—whether through a sharp life course shift or as the savory culmination of years of beverage experience—wasn’t necessarily inevitable, though it feeds into the broader, still-unfolding narrative of American craft rum’s revival.

“When I was just starting to drink, I discovered I couldn’t drink beer, or tequila, or vodka. I had this whole experience of what I couldn’t drink,” Karen Hoskin recalled, laughing. “And then I’m in India, and I’m on the beach and I’m bummed because I’m living with this Hindu family and they don’t drink at all. I had a bartender put some rum in front of me and I thought ‘Yes, more of that.’”

How Do You Define an “American-Style” of Rum?

How Do You Define an “American-Style” of Rum?

Rum is the most malleable of spirits. It’s a liquid shape-shifter that can vary by region and culture, from the full-bodied double-retort pot still rums of Jamaica to the grassy agricoles of Martinique to the crisper, dryer rums of Puerto Rico.

7 Holiday Pitcher Cocktails Sure to Impress Your Guests (And some of these drinks can warm you up for the winter!)

Our grandparents’ generation knew how to throw a party. Whether it was for Bridge club, neighborhood weenie roasts, or holiday gatherings, they put guests at ease with a warm welcome - and a cold drink. Yes, no matter what the occasion, guests were greeted at the door with the host’s #1 most important question: “What can I get you to drink?” These pitcher cocktails are the answer to that question.
