It has been a great year for the world finding out about Montanya rums. Here is a selection of the media articles that have featured Montanya Distillers in the first half of 2012. To read the articles, click on our News and Media link!
Montanya headed to New York for the Manhattan Cocktail Classic, a week long cocktail and spirit celebration that kicked off with a phenomenal gala at the New York Public Library. Montanya's team of Karen Hoskin and Michelle Baldwin bartended for three events and attended many more on behalf of the brand. At the Gala, Michelle and Karen served about 750 cocktails in less than 3 hours, and got tons of great feedback about how much folks loved the cocktails and the rum. We also attended the New York Indie Spirits Expo and the Industry Invitational at the Andaz Hotel. We will be back next year, so if you missed it this year, mark your calendars for 2013! To see more photos of the Manhattan Cocktail Classic, check out the MCC Gala Photostream at Flickr.
Below, you will see what happened when we ordered our shelf talkers and sell sheets from a green printer (using recycled paper, vegetable-based inks, etc.) instead of a traditional printing company!
0.33 trees preserved for the future
0.96 lbs of water-borne waste not created
141.91 lbs of wastewater flow saved
15.73 lbs of solid waste not generated
30.9 lbs of greenhouse gases prevented
236,633.54 BTUs of energy not consumed
Every little bit helps. :)
This classy new Tiki Bar just opened on South Broadway in Denver. They have really pulled off an authentic, vintage 1950's tiki feel. You WILL want to go check it out.
Montanya rums are being featured prominently on their menu of traditional Tiki cocktails. Visit our Brand Ambassador Michelle Baldwin, who is a bartender there!
Let us know what you think!
APRIL 17th, 2012: Yesterday, our Certificate of Occupancy (which returns the historic Powerhouse to its hallowed status as a factory!) was hand delivered with a happy handshake by the head of Crested Butte's Building Department Bob Gillie.
This simple slip of paper represents that all of our inspections have been passed and our compliance is 100% DONE! The Powerhouse is officially a working Distillery!
Today, with glee, we started fermentations.
And our Sidewalk Seating application was approved last night so there will be rum cocktails on the street side of Elk this summer! And more outside seating hopefully to come in 2012.
So now that we have run ourselves out of capital and credit line, we need everyone to come out for COCKTAILS!
:) Life is good.
Karen & Brice
We have been LOVING our Distillery space in Riverland (the light industrial park 2 miles south of downtown Crested Butte) but the dream and plan has always been to move our fermentations and distilling process into the historic Powerhouse. That dream is now fairly rapidly becoming a reality!
Come by and check it out! Our new still bases were fabricated locally by CB Ironworks in partnership with the engineers at REG. We are hoping to be distilling by early April at the latest! But we have learned that things happen in their own natural time and we just do our best to keep our shoulder to the wheel. :)

“Montanya Distillers’ Tasting Room has been a favorite rum cocktail joint in Colorado for three and a half years now. We were delighted that our new location in Crested Butte, in the historic Powerhouse, caught the attention of such seasoned travelers as the correspondents of Outside Magazine.” says Karen Hoskin, President of Montanya Distillers.
"Outside magazine has long been one of the world's most trusted advisors for active and adventurous travelers," says Outside editor Christopher Keyes. Montanya Distillers is one of Colorado’s original craft distilleries, founded in Silverton, Colorado in November 2008. The company relocated its operations to Crested Butte in May 2011 and took over one of the town’s most beloved, historic buildings downtown, along with several bays in the local industrial park. The 4,000 sq. ft. historic Powerhouse building on Elk Avenue houses the company’s Distillery and a Tasting Room for its award-winning Montanya Oro and Montanya Platino rums. Bottling, warehousing and shipping takes place at their second Crested Butte location.
Montanya has become well-known for its distinctive and genre-bending rum cocktails like The Maharaja Martini (Montanya Oro rum, North Indian spices, fresh ginger and lime) and The Basil Paradisi (Basil infused-Platino rum, fresh grapefruit and lime). The company currently distributes its rums in thirty US states including widely in Colorado, and will expand to all fifty states within the next 36 months under a new contract.
In celebration of the Outside Active Travel Awards, Outside will launch the “What Trip Are You?” Facebook promotion, which will allow members of the Outside community to take an adventure travel quiz to determine what type of vacation best suits their adventure style from five categories. The categories include: Enlightened Explorer, Powder Hound, River Runner, World Traveler, and Adrenaline Junkie. Participants will be able to choose between a series of travel favorites—Hotel or rustic lodge? Tropical escape or powdery heaven? Guide or no guide?—that will lead to their ultimate adventure travel escape.
Five grand prize winners (one per category) will get the chance to go on their dream adventure provided by Outside’s travel partners. Trip options include: Dory or raft trip down the Grand Canyon with OARS, Heli-ski in AK's Chugach range with Valdez Heli Ski Guides and Tsaina Lodge, Safari in Botswana with Wilderness Safaris and South African Airways, Multi-sport in Machu Picchu and Galapagos with REI Adventures, and an Andes to Amazon multisport trip with BikeHike Adventures. In addition, participants who take the quiz can come back for daily adventure travel gear prizes.
It has been a big week at Montanya Distillers in Crested Butte! The stills and fermentations tanks are starting to be installed in the Powerhouse.
We are all so excited to see this final step of our nearly year-long process of moving taking place in front of our eyes.
CB Ironworks did an amazing job (!!) fabricating two custom still bases and condenser tables for us. REG Engineering has been a great partner, along with Timberline Mechanical and Dragon Sheet Metal, to get everything professionally made and installed.
Yes, it is true, we will have less space for big events. But we think this will be truly value-added for Crested Butte locals and visitors alike. Come check it out! We will be open through the off-season and in April and May, we will be offering a local's tour and tasting package to encourage Crested Butte folks to come in and learn more. Details to come.
We will have two stills, 6 fermentation tanks and barrel storage in the Powerhouse. Distilling on site will begin at the end of the month is long as all of our inspections go brilliantly.
Live music this weekend with Bruce Hayes and the New Ragged Mountain Ramblers from 4:30-7:30pm Friday night.
This week's cocktail special is called The Powerhouse. It seems like a lot of folks are trying to shake colds and coughs, so we created just the THING to help. A tall cocktail with Montanya Platino, papaya, lime, lemon, acai, and coconut water! It is packed with Vitamin C, antioxidants, minerals, calcium, fiber, and potassium. Plus, rum is the ultimate, um, well, we can't really say medicine, but the pirates sure thought so!
Last but not at all least, starting tonight we will begin giving away a Venture Helix snowboard made in Silverton, Colorado. Enter to win in exchange for a $2 donation to double benefit Cash Lamar and family and the Trailhead Children's Discovery Museum. Stop by Montanya to see the Venture Snowboard and enter to win. The giveaway will happen at the Eldo on March 23rd during the Montanya-sponsored James and the Devil show, and more donations toward entries will be accepted at that show. The winner need not be present to win, but it sure would be cool if they were there!
The board is a Helix, 158 in length and 25 width made in Silverton, CO from sustainably-harvested hardwoods, rockered tip to tail, and with a quadratic side cut. You won't want to miss a chance to win it.

Cherry Royale will be at the Lobar instead, so they can play later and offer revelers more options of beverages! Still a great CB show!
After 2 and a half months of assessments ("How strong IS that floor?") and answers ("Strong enough to drive a car on!") and unexpected discoveries ("Why the heck are the kitchen doors wagging in a ghostly fashion?") and more answers ("Because the kitchen hood has no make up air!"), we are finally ready to start installing fermenters and stills in the Powerhouse!
Luckily our distilling operation in Riverland has been working great in the interim, but we have always wanted the public to get a good look at what we do! And the Powerhouse is begging to be a distillery, as we knew from the first day we laid eyes on it.
So yesterday we laid out the design plan in tape on the floor. Wednesday, we convene the engineers and building inspector for one more look over the CAD plans. Then over the next month, you will start to see the sealed combustion still bases installed on a platform in the back part of the main room in the Powerhouse. Once these are installed and tested, the stills will go on them, the fermenting tanks will be moved from Riverland, and more barrels will come in as well.
These are exciting times. Soon you will be able to come have a seat at our Distillers Bar and watch all the action.
December 29, 2011: The Silverton Tasting Room is getting ready to reopen on December 31st! This tasting room, now in a new location at 1309 Greene Street is owned/operated by Tony and Cokie Berenyi. Molly Morris will continue on as TR Manager in Silverton, and Maryanne Garvin has taken on a larger role with the new operation as well.
It will have many of the same familiar faces and all the familiar delicious rum cocktails from our old location in Silverton. It is gorgeous! (Well done, Jim Weller Construction and Berenyi Inc.) The appetizer menu will be expanded, as well as the square footage of the space. They will also be serving Colorado beers, but not selling bottles of Montanya.
CHECK IT OUT! We will post when it for sure opens its doors. As we all know, unforseen delays can slow things down. But hopefully you will be able to ring in the New Year with a Montanya cocktail in hand!
The Tasting Room in Silverton has officially re-opened at 1309 Greene Street. Check it OUT!
December 22, 2011: "To all of you that provided the incredible collection of Colorado Spirits I had the great honor of pouring at the Edible Aspen Event at the St. Regis Hotel about 10 days ago, many thanks. There were about 350 guests at the event and the room was packed. Everyone that stopped by to sample with us was blown away by the quality and most of all the unique flavor profiles in each and every bottle. I only wish I could have offered bottles for sale. There was a lot of interest particularly from those that were not residents of Aspen. We handed out directions to the local liquor stores that carry your spirits as well as your web addresses.
As for me the event was an epiphany of sorts in the sense that I had the opportunity to see individuals react to the different bottles. Many of the guests discovered that they liked spirits other than what they normally consumed. Wow that tastes different than what I expected was one of the common exclamations! You know when I go to the big tasting events I go specifically to taste spirits so that I am on top of how products evolve and to sample the bottles I have the least experience with. I rarely taste wines at these events …for me spirits get the least attention at retail yet their nuances cover a very broad range compared to beer and wine! I hand sell every day in our store and I can assure all of you that your distilleries are at the top of my conversations with customers.
Bravo …let me applaud your efforts, all of you operate at a level of excellence that is astounding. It is so much different from the reactions I get sampling wine from Colorado and I honestly would not have known how to explain it if I had not had this opportunity to pour for you at Lisa Houston’s event.
Nevertheless, I am going to forward your contact info to Lisa and once again many thanks for participating!

December 20, 2011: In celebration of our third anniversary and our new facilities in Crested Butte, we threw a BIG bash at the Historic Powerhouse on December 16th. The band Green River Vibe from Denver was fantastic and the aerial dancers from the Crested Butte Dance Collective were a showstopper! Fantastic. Thank you to everyone (about 300 people!) who came out to celebrate with us. Exciting times at Montanya!
The new Crested Butte rum is really delicious, if we don't say so ourselves. The Oro has a deeper, richer, near-red color that was a surprise to us, given that only our water source has chanced. It is beautiful.
We will (formally) celebrate our Opening at the Powerhouse in Crested Butte with a party from 4-10pm on December 16th! Denver band Green River Vibe will bring a rock-infused reggae and hip-hip groove to the evening from 7-10pm. Drinks will be discounted too and we will celebrate our company's third anniversary! No cover, of course. Come join us...
After nearly 6 months of switching federal permit locations and outfitting two new Distillery spaces and a new Tasting Room, and of course after the attendant delays, we are officially distilling in Crested Butte!
Our downtown location (130 Elk Avenue) is in CB's Historic hydro-electric Powerhouse, which has been wonderfully repurposed as our Distillery and new Tasting Room. In CB's light industrial park called Riverland, Montanya has an 1,800 sq. ft. bay where we will bottle, package, palletize, warehouse and ship the rum to points distant.
We are so excited to have this kind of incredible space and the support we have had from so many directions, including the Town of Crested Butte, the Crested Butte Chamber of COmmerce, Crested Butte Mountain Resort, and Gunnison County.
